Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity charters bus to support NSU Demons

Members of Beta Omicron chapter are taking their support of the NSU Demons on the road. Reviving a chapter tradition dating back to the 1970s, the chapter chartered a bus to to the NSU versus LSU football game in Baton Rouge. Pi Kapps, their dates, and even NSU’s Purple Pizazz Pom Pon line hopped on board to make the trek. Arriving a few hours before kickoff, the bus pulled right up to Tiger Stadium. Another Beta Omicron tradition, tailgating, came along for the ride. Members met up with several Beta Omicron alumni, enjoyed great food and music, then made their way into Death Valley for the game. Alumnus David D. Morgan, Sr. helped the chapter underwrite a portion of the trip, recalling his experiences on past Beta Omicron trips. Pi Kappa Phi was the only NSU fraternity to charter a bus to the game.

Photo collection documents 55 years of Beta Omicron history

Five years of collecting, scanning, organizing and researching will give hundreds of Pi Kapp alumni a glimpse into the storied past of Beta Omicron Chapter. A collection of photographs dating back to the late 1920s illustrates key moments in the formation of the chapter’s predecessor, Phi Kappa Nu. More images document the 55 years since Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity was established at Northwestern State University.

At the time of the chapter’s 50th anniversary in 2006, alumnus Lane Luckie began collecting photos for a slide show to be presented at the reunion. Since then, his desire to preserve the chapter’s history has grown include 1,065 photographs; each one telling a unique story. “I’ve always been a huge history buff, but I found a particular devotion in documenting Beta Omicron Chapter because of my personal connection.” After years of sorting through NSU Potpourri yearbooks, photo albums, chapter archives, Facebook, and by soliciting individual alumni, he’s organized a permanent digital collection. “The parallels are amazing,” said Luckie. ”When you compare the early days of the chapter with the current group, we have more in common than anyone could imagine.” Read the rest of this entry

Internship takes member to U.S. Senator’s office on Capitol Hill

David Hogan’s first visit to Washington, DC wasn’t one of touring monuments or taking in the grand architecture; he had arrived for the job experience of a lifetime. The junior from Hammond spent four weeks in June interning for U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu.

Hogan, a member of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity at Northwestern State University, hopes to one day pursue a career in law or politics. He jumped at the opportunity to explore these interests in a real-world setting. Almost a year in advance he began the lengthy process of apply. A letter of interest, an application, and three letters of recommendation later, he was accepted.

Founders Generation Group member passes to chapter eternal

Charles Edmond Doty, an alumnus of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, passed away on July, 1, 2011 after succumbing to an unexpected illness. Doty was 71. Charles and his wife, Marian, graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in Shreveport, Louisiana and received degrees from Northwestern State University in 1963. As an undergraduate, Charles was a member of the Beta Omicron Chapter and ROTC. He later retired as a Colonel in the U.S. Army and from Southwest Electric Power Company (SWEPCO). Last year, Charles was recognized for 50 years of membership in Pi Kappa Phi, having initiated as Beta Omicron’s 60th member in March, 1960. In the time since, Charles and his wife Marian have been active in the Founders Generation Alumni Group, attending numerous reunions, meetings, and gatherings. Read the rest of this entry

Beta Omicron a leader in contributions to Pi Kappa Phi Foundation

Alumni members of Beta Omicron chapter are among the most dedicated in supporting the educational efforts of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Of 217 total chapters, Beta Omicron was ranked 5th in total contributions to the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation. In 2010, ten alumni contributed $13,769 in support of educational initiatives of the Fraternity.

The Foundation provides educational support directly to student members and supports the educational initiatives of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity though the solicitation of donations from alumni and friends of Pi Kappa Phi. Several scholarships recognize Pi Kappa Phi undergraduate and graduate students who excel in areas of academics, chapter leadership and campus/community involvement. These scholarships underscore an important part of the Foundation’s mission while providing real and tangible support to student leaders who bring credit to themselves and their fraternity. Two NSU students chosen for highly-selective Pi Kapp College

Two up-and-coming student leaders at NSU now have the tools essential to revitalize their campus Greek system and growing leaders within their chapter. Pi Kappa Phi President Scott Mayeaux and member Ryan Jeffords were among 60 Pi Kappa Phi’s from across the country selected for Pi Kapp College 2011. Pi Kapp College is designated as Pi Kappa Phi’s premier leadership program and serves as a transformational experience designed to challenge and empower members to become better leaders and better men. Each summer, emerging leaders from across America converge on the birthplace of Pi Kappa Phi for an intensive, six-day experience created to explore the principles of leadership and the values of Pi Kappa Phi.

Member leads bicycle trek across Florida to raise disability awareness

Changing lives often requires an extraordinary effort, like the one exhibited by Beta Omicron member Chris Alley. The NSU senior led a team of cyclists across Florida to re-shape the perception of people with disabilities. On May 12, 2011, this 800-mile cycling event kicked off on the shores of Miami, traveled through the Florida orange fields, reached the Gulf coast, passed through Orlando, wound back to the Atlantic coast and culminated at the State Capitol in Tallahassee. The team spread a message of acceptance and understanding to communities in Florida through newspapers, radio and television, civic groups and community leaders, reaching millions of people. As a crew member, Alley focused on logistics, managing the riders and working with local contacts to ensure the success of each leg of the route.

Alumnus makes cameo on NBC’s “Today” Show

Service in the U.S. Navy brings sailors to all corners of the Earth, but for Beta Omicron alumnus Matt Darby, it landed him a brief appearance on NBC’s “Today” Show.

On May 31, 2011 Darby and fellow sailors filed into the daily crowd that gathers outside Rockefeller Plaza to watch the live broadcast of the “Today” Show. A sea of uniforms filled the screen when anchors Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira mentioned Fleet Week. The annual event brings the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps to New York City for entertainment and activities during the week leading up to Memorial Day.

Having served watch from 2 to 4 a.m. that morning, Darby arrived to “30 Rock” after only an hour of sleep. Despite being groggy, he says the NBC crew picked him to stand up front because he looked like a “model sailor,” perfect for TV. “In fact, both Meredith Vieira and Ann Curry told me I was cute,” said Darby. Beta Omicron helps establish chapter at rival university

Beta Omicron chapter’s year-long effort to help establish a chapter at rival Stephen F. Austin State University culminated on April 30th, 2011. Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity chartered its 222nd chapter with the installation of the Iota Zeta chapter. Living in East Texas, Beta Omicron alumnus Lane Luckie helped start the SFA chapter and serves as chapter advisor. Throughout that year, several members of the Beta Omicron chapter and its alumni aided the SFA associate chapter in their various projects and efforts. Just more than a year after colonizing in Nacogdoches, the associate chapter received its charter. Pi Kappa Phi named top Greek organization for second consecutive year

A semester of hard work has paid off for members of the Beta Omicron Chapter. On April 26th, 2011, Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity was awarded the prestigious President’s Cup for the second consecutive year. The honor recognizes the top Greek organization at Northwestern State University. Since first receiving the award in 2010, the chapter has continued to make strides to improve. Those efforts did not go unnoticed, being named “Most Improved Chapter.” The chapter’s Miss Push America Pageant, which raised $3 thousand for people with disabilities, was named “Most Outstanding Single Event”. Archon Scott Mayeaux was also named the 2011 “NSU Emerging Greek Leader.” Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity received the highest ranking, “Commitment to Excellence,” in each of the chapter operation areas annually ranked by the NSU Office of Greek Affairs.

Six recognized for going the “Extra Mile” at NSU

Six members of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity were honored for their commitment to leadership at the fourth annual Beta Omicron Scholarship Banquet. On Saturday, March 19, 2011; Jon Lee, Kyle Duhon, Chase Harvey, Scott Mayeaux, Tyler Stahl and Ryan Jeffords were named the Spring 2011 “Morgan Extra Mile Scholars.” The recipients were selected for excellence in academics, campus and chapter leadership, service, and employment. Over $2,000 in scholarships were awarded at the banquet, held at Lasyone’s Meatpie Restaurant in Natchitoches. Read the rest of this entry

Pi Kappa Phi hosts pageant to raise funds and awareness to benefit people with disabilities

Junior Amy Dodson has been named the 2011 Northwestern State University Miss Push America. Dodson and 16 other contestants competed for the title. The pageant, an outreach project of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, aims to raise awareness on behalf of people with disabilities. Prior to the competition, contestants were encouraged to raise funds and awareness for the fraternity’s philanthropy, Push America. Since 1977, Push America has raised millions of dollars for and positively impacted the lives of thousands of people with disabilities. Thursday’s contestants included Jessi Nuss, Alyson Humphrey, Amy Dodson, Shannon Byrd, Brittny Cain, Brittany Jeanice, Whitney Irvin, Logan Wallace, Chelsea Giles, Tiffany Hudson, Hayley Wilson, Meaghan Foucheux, Gillian Brown, Patience West, Amy Pogue, Heather Ray, and Ashley Rogers. Pi Kappa Phi to host annual Miss Push America Pageant

The Beta Omicron Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi is proud to present the 2nd annual Miss Push America Pageant at Northwestern State University. The competition will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2010 in the Sylvan Friedman Student Union Ballroom. The pageant, an outreach project of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, aims to raise awareness on behalf of people with disabilities. Founded in 1977, Push America is the national philanthropy of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity. Through its mission, building leaders of tomorrow by serving people with disabilities today, Push America has raised millions of dollars for and positively impacted the lives of thousands of people with disabilities. Four Beta Omicron members join National President’s Circle

In 2011, more than 400 students have joined Pi Kappa Phi Foundation’s National President’s Circle (NPC), the student giving club for the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation. Members of the NPC are Pi Kappa Phi students who make a gift of $20 to the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation to support the leadership and education programs of the fraternity each year. Mid Year Leadership Conference 2011: Ignite

The newly elected officers of the Beta Omicron Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity traveled to Dallas, Texas on January 14-16 for a hands-on leadership training institute. Attending the annual Mid Year Leadership Conference, eight leaders from each chapter connected with brothers, got answers about how to run the chapter and engage in the leadership of Pi Kappa Phi. The “Ignite” theme of Mid Year Leadership Conference 2011 is a call of action to member of Pi Kappa Phi; a challenge that acknowledges the fact that one individual has the potential to make a difference in the lives of the members with which he interacts.
