NSU Pi Kapps to participate in first-ever Gear Up New York cycling event

Matthew Bailey and Ayden Slack, members of Pi Kappa Phi at Northwestern State University, are about to embark on a bold new adventure from the fraternity’s philanthropy, The Ability Experience.

Both freshmen from Vivian, Louisiana, have been selected to participate in Gear Up New York, a 550-mile cycling event that raises awareness for people with disabilities.

This inaugural event, modeled after The Ability Experience’s long-running Gear Up Florida, will take team members from Niagara Falls and Buffalo across the Empire State this August, ending in New York City over the course of 10 days.

These adventures build men of Pi Kappa Phi into servant leaders and raises funds and awareness for people with disabilities. Simply put, the Gear Up events are rides with a purpose.

“Projects like this are a way for more people to be aware of disabilities and be able to step in and advocate for others wherever they can,” Bailey said.

The true impact of the Gear Up New York can be felt through its programming. Nearly everyday on the trip, the teams meet with organizations that support people with disabilities at events called ‘friendship visits.’ These unique shared experiences could be a karaoke dance party or a game of wheelchair basketball or even just sharing a meal together. Team members gain perspective and learn lessons that will impact them for the rest of their lives, and the organizations they visit look forward to them coming back year after year!

Bailey has set a fundraising goal of $4,500, while Slack will raise $4,000. Those interested in making a tax deductible donation can visit their secure giving pages online.

Bailey and Slack aren’t the only Northwestern State Pi Kapps participating in an Ability Experience national event this Summer.

Mitchell Mayfield, Owen Stutzman, and Tyler Dupuis have been selected for the cross-country cycling event, The Journey of Hope.

26 other members of the Beta Omicron Chapter of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity at NSU have completed national events of The Ability Experience since 2000.
